Margaret Murray was born in 1863, the youngest daughter of J.C.Murray, businessman, of Calcutta; and niece of the Rev. John Murray of Lambourn. She first entered University College London as a student in 1894, and in 1899 became a junior lecturer in Egyptology there. She was Assistant Professor of Egyptology at University College London from 1924 to 1935. She was a member of the Folk Lore Society from 1927 and President from 1953 to 1955.
